Water filter

This Lipscombe and Co. water filter was made in Temple Bar, London, c.1851-76. The filter would have used a porous ceramic or charcoal disc to filter impurities out of water. Its presence on a 19th century archaeological site in Christchurch indicates the growing concern people had about the safety of the city’s drinking water.
